Your DOG / CAT has been suffering from severe itching for some time. As is often the case with itching, the causes are difficult to determine. And until the cause is really clear, many things are tried.
However, itching in dogs is anything but funny, but annoying – both for the dog and for the dog owner.
Itching in dogs – common causes
Itching in dogs can visibly affect a dog’s life. Because it is so annoying, dogs’ attention levels drop, they become irritable more easily, are less efficient and are often distracted. And at night the itching can be so severe that dogs can no longer sleep peacefully on their dog bed and find it even harder to concentrate the next day. The most common causes of itching in dogs are
Parasites such as ticks, fleas and mites
– Bacterial infections
– Fungal infections
– Food allergies and intolerances
– Gastrointestinal problems
– Weakened immune system
– Allergies triggered by environmental influences, e.g. house dust allergy, dermatitis to certain chemical cleaning agents, etc.
Itching is often an indication of another illness
Unfortunately, you are already a regular patient at the vet. All the blood tests, examinations for ticks, fleas, mites, bacteria, fungi, fecal examinations and exclusion diets have revealed nothing.
Today we know that the scratchy patches on the belly and paws are a symptom of an underlying health problem.
In most cases it is a disturbed intestinal flora and a weakened immune system.
